shamelessly stolen from k.
I Am – blessed. which is really not a word i used very often, but i was thinking the other day that i really am blessed.
I Want – to understand how to help others without being condescending or patronising.
I Have – rather big feet for my stature.
I Wish – i could do more.
I Hate – very few things. and try not to use the word 'hate' in my daily life after i once said i 'hated' a song and my friend called me on it and said that was a lot of negative energy to put in the world. i agreed.
I Fear – loosing control, having surgery, blood tests, and birds when they flap their wings when they are taking off.
I Hear – the din of my cubicle farm.
I Search – for comfortable socks and underwear. and myself on google.
I Wonder – where i will be in 2 years', 5 years', and 10 years' time.
I Regret – nothing. there is a lot i wish never happened, but i don't regret it. if that makes sense.
I Love – my family. they are the funniest people i know.
I Ache – when i eat chocolate or ice cream.
I Always – use q tips to clean my ears.
I Usually – do not get enough sleep.
I Am Not – sure what i want to be when i grow up.
I Dance – like a white girl.
I Sing – at home when i am alone and wonder if anyone can hear me.
I Never – wear mismatched socks.
I Rarely – just have one glass of red wine.
I Cry – when i am really happy.
I Am Not Always – punctual, even though i wish i was.
I Lose – my cool when i feel as though i am being manipulated or forced to do something against my will.
I’m Confused – about climate change. and carbon capture. and if we are really doomed no matter what we do or don't do.
I Need – to have my hair coloured.
I Should – eat more regular and balanced meals.
I Dream – in bollywood, sometimes.
I Hope – that my trip to toronto is lots of excitement and fun.
I Feel – a bit useless today.
I Appreciate – my family more now than ever before.

it's all true
borrowed from this lady, here are 10 things about me that you may not have already known.
1 - most people are surprised to learn that by nature, i am an introvert and shy, sometimes painfully. although i do enjoy public speaking.
2 - things i love include writing, learning new cities, q tips, david suzuki, the smell of scotch tape, earl grey tea, chocolate fudge cake from nairobi java house, kofi annan, alberta beef, barack obama's smile, the smell of pine trees, music that almost makes you cry, going out for breakfast even though i don't like most breakfast foods, airports, novels, daytimers, creme brule, medium or dark roast black coffee, that feeling that you get two days after you've used your muscles, french red wine, tulips, buying clothes, and receiving mail both electronic and snail. that list is not exhaustive.
3 - i could tell my sister anything. while i wouldn't tell my brothers anything, i could be anyone or do anything with them.
4 - my recent love life reads like a soap opera drama. do you know anyone who actually went to an airport expecting someone to arrive only to find out they had never bought a ticket for the flight? well, now you do.
5 - i have really big feet for my size. i would quite like to trade them for a more user-friendly pair.
6 - i want to be famous. but not in the celebrity way. in the way that i am known for something. and i google myself regularly.
7 - my newest canadian hero is louise arbour. she will soon be the executive director of the International Crisis Group.
8 - i am neither a cat person nor a dog person, i am both. and i don't think you should have to choose between them. my dog has one eye and my cat sleeps on my bed every night. my brother says that although you are never supposed to talk about a girl's weight, my cat seems to have lost her waist line in recent years. that is also true.
9 - blueberries are my favourite berry.
10 - if i won the lottery, i would go back to uni and study my little heart out. i would also travel around the world, staying in the cheapest as well as the most luxurious hotels i could find. i'd drink san pelligrino exclusively and provide numerous microfinance loans to people in canada and abroad.

overhead in nairobi
(september 12, 2007)
the following were all parts of my conversations today:
‘i put my indicator pants on this morning and they gave me good news, they indicated in the right direction’
(you know indicator pants, the ones that tell you when you have gained or lost weight)
‘today was such a long day, the best thing that happened to me was that i found out i am hiv negative.’
(i am not sure why i find this so funny but i think it had something to do with the delivery and the absolute seriousness with which it was spoken. i guess you call that irony)
‘my stomach is full but my brain tells me to keep eating’
(this seems to happen a lot in our flat but without the goodies that we are used to eating when we want to eat snacks or junk, we eat pb outta the jar, cheese, substandard ice cream, yoghurt, cups of tea, or left-overs – none of which are terribly unhealthy)
‘you smell like an engine’
(he did)
‘i know how much you love q tips, do you want the package of q tips that came in my package from north america?’
(ummmm... yes! do you even need to ask? q tips around here are like cigarettes in prison, or what i would imagine cigarettes would be in prison – you can barter and trade using them as currency because they are so scarce and difficult to get. i now have a fresh package for all my ear cleaning needs. if i have one neurosis (and who are we kidding, i have about 56), it is obsessively cleaning my ears with q tips and no other brand can even begin to compare)

i've pet a giraffe
it took me 45 days to go through 170 Q Tips. that is an average of 3.7 tips per day. i really need to find a replacement for my overuse of Q Tips. good thing i am going to be seeing my parents this weekend so they can restock me with more of my favourite personal hygiene item. and good that i get to see them too, Q Tips or not!
i have recently perfected the indian head bobble wiggle thing. check out russell peter's comedy shows for the perfect impression that i am doing as i write this but you obviously cannot appreciate. i still have no idea what it means, but after negotiating with the tailor this saturday afternoon (where he really just kept lowering his price, wiggling his head, then asking if we were together on the price - the easiest negotatiations i have ever been involved in) i am now an expert in the move. the secret is in keeping the rest of your body totally still.
the other result of my hour or so spent in the tailor's is that i have a duvet cover and curtains being made to my specifications with the fabric i chose and the design i created. all for less than i'd pay for one set of sheets at home. i love africa.
i also pet a giraffe this weekend. then i fed a giraffe. then a giraffe hit me in the head with its all powerful ear. and there were more baby warthogs! all at a giraffe sanctuary on the edge of town in the swish colonial area. photos forthcoming...
my sunday was spent at a christmas market where i got a slight sunburn. i love standing next to a christmas tree and having to remove your sunglasses for a better view. i managed to purchase another scarf but this time i offered the guy what i had in my wallet, which was far below the price tag, and he actually agreed. as it supports a women's weaving cooperative and i love socially conscious consumption, i feel good about this purchase.
the night before, however, i complimented a woman on her scarf that was tied in her hair and she promptly removed the scarf and insist that i take it. i need to watch who i compliment on what or i might end up with more than i bargain for!
